A Guide to Proper Tree Planting
After your site is selected and approved by DigRite:
- Dig a hole that’s 1.5 to 2x the size of the root mass, only 70% of the depth of the root ball– try to achieve 30% above grade.
- Take 50% of the native soil removed from the hole, set aside, and replace it with 50% Plant Right Compost. Blend the native soil and compost together thoroughly.
- If the trees roots are circling or are tightly bound, carefully knife through the roots and spread out in a flare.
- Use the compost/soil mix to backfill around the root ball, every few inches gently but firmly tamping soil around the root zone.
- When the soil reaches top of root ball, apply a few gallons of water to aid in the settling of the soil and to remove air pockets.
- Use remaining soil to create a gentle slope from the top of the root ball to the edge.
- Apply Biolife 800 per directions on bottle.
- Mulch the tree with two (2) inches of mulch to the edge of the planting area, but keep the mulch 1-2’’ from the trunk of the tree. Your mulch should look like a doughnut.
- If in areas of high wind, staking may be needed. Typically, 1 year is long enough to keep your tree staked to keep it growing straight.
- Do not prune for at least one growing season, and water deeply on a regular basis with a soaker hose or a Dewitt water bag .
